After breast reconstruction, unwanted muscle animation can cause visible distortion or discomfort in the chest. With advanced repair techniques and meticulous surgical planning, Dr. James Bruno helps restore smooth contours and natural breast movement.
Understanding Muscle Animation After Reconstruction
Muscle animation, sometimes called animation deformity, can occur when a breast implant is positioned beneath the pectoral muscle during reconstruction. When the muscle contracts during activities such as lifting, stretching, or even simple arm movements, it may pull across the implant, causing the breast to shift downwards or outwards, or to change shape temporarily.
Patients may notice:
- Visible wrinkling or rippling across the breast
- Unwanted movement of the implant during arm activity
- Tightness or pulling in the chest
- A breast contour that changes with muscle contraction
This occurs most often when there is limited natural tissue coverage between the implant and the skin. As the muscle moves, it transfers that motion directly to the implant, creating the animation effect. While the condition is not dangerous, it can affect both comfort and aesthetic confidence, especially during exercise or daily activities.
